Teaching Method

Tomo does not attempt to force his own musical taste on students. However, like the Berklee Guitar Department, Tomo emphasizes the blues as a learning tool for guitarists, given the influence of blues on rock, jazz and funk.

In these subscription lessons, Tomo tries to move players away from their reliance on tablature or chord diagrams. Rather than thinking of scales and chords as shapes, players learn to hear/recognize the music.

The lessons are designed for busy people with varying levels of guitar-playing ability. The objectives are: (1) developing and strengthening your musical foundation, (2) improving your technique at all levels, and (3) putting you on a path to mastery of the guitar.

Learning with Guitar Wisdom

If you are a beginner, we recommend that you start with the Beginner Series and the Sight-Reading Series. Both of these are arranged sequentially, so that you can follow an established path.

Guitarists with some experience may want to jump into the Foundation & Technique series and Music Theory I, working on both Series more or less simultaneously. These lessons are  linear/sequential at the beginning, but they soon transition to topical lessons.

The lessons on Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, and so on are topical. They are not meant to be followed in any strict order. Work on what interests you!

There are many paths to wisdom! The most important thing is to find the path that is right for you. Guitar Wisdom gives you the flexibility to follow your own path! Come along for the ride!

Subscribers’ Reviews/Comments
Tomo Fujita Guitar Wisdom

Tomo Fujita Guitar Wisdom is a game changer. Returning to guitar last year after a 15-year hiatus was very difficult. Tomo is the only one I have found who can break things down just enough to give you direction while letting you explore on your own.

A prime example is in his Beginner Series. Here Tomo teaches you how to play around with open chords by throwing in a finger here or there to change the sound.  He also shows alternate chord fingerings. This shows that guitar playing is not as rigid as you may think, and it makes experimenting fun. His way of breaking down concepts and linking them to his other videos is second to none. For example, the Sight Reading and Foundation series tie directly into the Beginner Lessons. Here you will learn good habits and everyday exercises, as well as how to read music. There is also an active forum, where the community posts questions and answers, and there are more advanced lessons for experienced players.

Perhaps the true gem of Guitar Wisdom is Tomo’s philosophy: “Don’t compare! Don’t expect [to progress] too fast! Don’t worry! Be kind to yourself!” These simple words strip the anxiety from learning guitar and help students to focus on what matters. Tomo’s wisdom can also be applied to everyday life!

By encouraging good habits, sharing his personal philosophy, and applying his teaching expertise to Guitar Wisdom, Tomo has accelerated my learning and helped me move forward on my journey, much more than I can express in this short review.

The best thing about Guitar Wisdom is that it’s taught by someone who is truly passionate about teaching and guitar, with experience that includes many years of teaching real students.

I love Tomo’s philosophy in general. “Be kind to yourself” is so profound, yet understated. I wish more teachers emphasized self-love and philosophy the same way Tomo does. It not only changes your own perception of playing guitar, but it’s just a good motto to live by in general.

I love the in-depth lessons about music theory, because Tomo makes it simple to understand. It’s so refreshing for someone to teach slowly, and to encourage students to take their time. And (OMG!) triads have changed everything for me. Being able to play different notes in 3’s across the fretboard has been eye-opening.  I’ve stepped up my guitar game significantly.

I released my first song in August 2020. Back then, I didn’t know how to solo very well. It would take months of cutting up something that was half decent. I really didn’t want to play that way. I wanted to play melodically, so I could perform and really show my hard work.

Because of Guitar Wisdom, I’ve been releasing more songs with my guitar solos. I’ve got some guitar voice (it’s not fully developed, but hey, it’s totally me!) now. That’s the magic that Tomo gave me: the ability to find my own guitar voice. And for that, I’m eternally grateful to Tomo and Guitar Wisdom.
